I can say that until the university exam, studying medicine or becoming a medical doctor was almost never on my mind. After the exam, my preferences were engineering and medical faculty and I was accepted to Ege University Faculty of Medicine. I was very bored in the basic sciences classes in the first years of university and I thought that studying medicine was not for me. I started to enjoy it with the clinical courses that started in the third year. I wanted to be an internal medicine specialist until I started my general surgery internship in the fourth grade.
Dr. Gökhan İçöz who is my teacher during the general surgery internship, impressed me a lot. His knowledge, analytical approach to diseases and surgeries, and humane stance were very impressive. From that day on, my greatest desire was to become a general surgeon. During my internship, I volunteered for surgeries and became more impressed with the field of general surgery. Sixth grade ended and I received the title of medical doctor. In the first medical specialization exam I took, I applied only for general surgery and got accepted to Tepecik Training and Research Hospital. At the end of five years, I received the title of general surgery specialist in December 2011. I say I’m glad I did, because I love my profession very much.
